Why Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling? 7 Things to Check First
Few things spike the blood pressure like opening the fridge to warm milk. The good news: when a refrigerator is running but not cooling, the cause is usually one of a handful of common issues — and a couple of them you can fix yourself in five minutes.
1. Check the obvious first
Before anything else, confirm the basics:
- Is the temperature dial set correctly? (Aim for 37°F in the fridge, 0°F in the freezer.)
- Is the unit plugged in and the outlet live?
- Did someone leave a door slightly ajar?
2. Dirty condenser coils
This is the single most common cause we see in Houston homes. Dusty coils can’t release heat, so the fridge runs constantly but never gets cold. Pull the unit out, vacuum the coils underneath or behind it, and give it 24 hours.
Pro tip: If you have pets, clean your coils every 6 months. It’s the cheapest way to extend your fridge’s life.
3. Blocked airflow
An overpacked fridge — or vents blocked by food — stops cold air from circulating. Make sure the interior vents aren’t covered.
4. Faulty evaporator fan
If the freezer is cold but the fridge isn’t, a failing evaporator fan may not be moving cold air between compartments. You’ll often hear a chirping noise or no fan noise at all.
5. Frost-covered evaporator coils
A defrost system failure lets ice build up on the coils until airflow stops. This one usually needs a technician to diagnose the defrost heater, thermostat, or control board.
6. Condenser fan or compressor
If the compressor runs hot or the condenser fan has seized, cooling drops off. These are repairable but are best left to a certified tech.
7. Control board or sensor
Modern fridges rely on sensors and a main control board. When these fail, the compressor may not get the signal to cool. Diagnosis requires the right tools.
When to call D3S
If you’ve checked the coils and airflow and it’s still warm after 24 hours, it’s time to call a pro — running a failing fridge can damage the compressor.
